Canadian National Context

Canada has a long history of support to international organizations including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United Nations (UN).  Canada’s history in the UN has been notable including recently with our participation in Bosnia, Haiti and Africa.   The Government of Canada has recently stated the goal, “to refocus its international assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable.” Canada will contribute to enhanced international peace and security to address the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable populations.  The objective is to create a ‘safer world’ that will not only enhance the lives of the affected populations but will also mean a more prosperous world for Canada.

“This Government is committed to strengthening Canada’s place in the world. In order to rebuild our international influence and have an impact, Canada will re-energize and reinforce our efforts to support multilateralism.” Budget p. 196

“The Government will adopt a proactive approach, a positive tone to its engagement, and will emphasize Canada’s interests and values. The Government will back its words with actions.” Budget p.197

The priority for Canada will be the African Union where a large number of the affected populations live.  Canada has a history of helping people affected from conflict and natural disasters in this region and based on our past involvement, we know that our assistance is needed.
