COLONEL (RET’D) GREGORY D. BURT, OMM, MSM, CD, MPA, MA, BAdmin

Colonel (ret’d) Gregory Burt joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1980 and received his commission from the Collège Militaire Royal of Saint-Jean in 1985.  His first operational tour was in Cyprus with the 2 Battalion Royal 22e Régiment in 1985 where he served as platoon commander and duty officer on the peacekeeping mission. 

Gregory Burt brings extensive operational experience to the AEGIS team and served all around the world often under extremely dangerous conditions.  In the summer of 1987, Col(ret’d) Burt was posted to 1st Battalion Royal 22e Régiment at Lahr, Federal Republic of Germany. During his time there, he was employed as platoon commander and subsequently commander of the reconnaissance platoon. In July 1992, he was posted to the Canadian Airborne Regiment, where he served as Second-in-Command 1 Commando in Africa. Upon his return to Canada, he served as the Regimental Adjutant and then Officer Commanding (OC) combat support company of the Regiment. In March 1995, he was posted to 2 Battalion Royal 22e Régiment. There, he served as Officer Commanding (OC) Combat Support Company in the former Yugoslavia, OC C Company, and OC of Service Support Company.  

From June 2001 to July 2004, Col(ret’d) Burt served as Commanding Officer (CO) of the Land Force Quebec Area Training Centre.   From March to October 2009, he deployed to Afghanistan as Commander of the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (OMLT) with the objective to train and mentor the Afghan army and police to a level where they can take over responsibility for the security and stability of local areas within Kandahar Province.

In 1990 and 1991, he was the officer-adjutant of the Royal 22e Régiment Battle School and the first standards officer. In 1998, he joined the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division in Bosnia as the Plans Officer with the Multi-National Division (South-West), Banja Luka, former Yugoslavia. Upon returning to the UK, he served as the Officer in charge of Operations and Exercise Planning. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in July 2000, and was posted to Kingston, Ontario, to the office of Director Land Strategic Concepts. 

In August 2004, Col(ret’d) Burt was posted to Nationale Defence Headquarters in Ottawa (NDHQ) and assumed the leadership of the Performance Management Core Action Team. In January of 2006, he was promoted Colonel and assumed the post of Director Defence Strategy Management. On July 13th 2007, Col(ret’d) Burt assumed the position of Chief of Staff of Land Force Québec Area / Joint Task Force (East). Concurrently starting on April 29th 2006, he also served as the Director of Infantry until September 2008. 

Upon his return from Afghanistan in October 2009, he was assigned to the position of Director Future Security Analysis and Director-General Partnerships and Emerging Issues. On June 6th 2011 he was posted to Chief Defence Intelligence (CDI) now the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command to the position of Director-General Intelligence Capabilities until Aug 30th 2013.

In September 2013, Colonel Burt became the 1st Commander of the Canadian Forces Intelligence Group. A formation for which he  led the conception, design, build and then the leadership of until July 2015. He retired on 10 August 2015.

Col(ret’d) Greg Burton brings a wealth of leadership and peace support operationstraining expertise to the AEGIS team. His work ethics, courage and leadership were recognized as he received the Order of Military Merit (OMM) and Meritorious Service Medal (MSM).
